McDowell Debate Team Wins the Pine-Richland Invitational; Prepares for Tough Competition at the Harvard University Invitational & National Qualifiers
The McDowell Speech & Debate Team made a very strong showing at the Pine-Richland Invitational, a tournament that draws top competition from across the region. McDowell placed 1st out of dozens of teams competing in Debate and placed 2nd in the Overall Team Awards that adds the team’s Debate points and Speech points. The team placed ahead of nearly thirty teams in the Overalls, defeating perennial powers like Mercer, Mount Lebanon and North Allegheny, and only placing behind defending West Virginia State Champions Wheeling Park High School. The team was led by remarkable individual performances by freshman Nasir Sharaf who won three of four debates in his debut in Pittsburgh and junior Robert Mingey, who was undefeated in LD Debate and won the Tournament Championship.
The team, additionally, is preparing to compete at the Harvard University Invitational on President’s Day Weekend. This will be the team’s fourth trip to the Invitational that draws the top programs from all over the northeast and prepares students for national competition. About thirty members of the team will be making the trip. The team will be lead by senior Angela Dai in debate, who has collected a remarkable 31 policy debate wins since last year. The speech team will be led by defending State Champion Sarah Granahan and three-time district champion Brett Wittmershaus.
McDowell Speech & Debate has built a strong tradition since December of 2000, and will attempt to qualify to the N.C.F.L. Grand National Tournament on March 1st, 2008. The team has qualified students to nationals seven straight years with highlights in 2003 when McDowell advanced to the National Semi-Finals in Student Congress and 2006 when Samantha Moore won the N.C.F.L.
