PLANS ANNOUNCED FOR FIRST-EVER ‘COURAGE BOWL’
This year’s Prep/McDowell football game will have a decidedly different look to it when the teams open their season. The game will mark the inaugural ‘Courage Bowl’ which will use proceeds from ticket sales to benefit cancer research. Two agencies that will receive funds locally are the Regional Cancer Center and the Erie branch of the American Cancer Society.
The game will take place on Friday, August 29th at 7pm at Veterans Stadium. Tickets for the Prep/McDowell game will cost $6.00 for adults, $4.00 for students. That additional one dollar increase will go directly to cancer research with the hope of raising ten thousand dollars total.
“We think this is a great opportunity to make a difference in our community as well as alert people to a disease that has affected every family in this country,” said Prep Athletic Director Bill Flanagan. “We’re not saying the Prep/McDowell game is the most important game of any played this season, but we think it offers the biggest stage locally to promote this cause.”
McDowell’s Associate Athletic Director, Brian Fuller, agreed. “We feel this will be a great event for all those involved and are thrilled to be a part of it. It will be nice to use this great rivalry to raise money and awareness for such a worthy cause.”
This idea was the brainchild of Mike Freeman, a 2004 Prep graduate who lost his mother to cancer. Mike played in a similar event while at the University of Rochester when they met their rival, St. John Fisher. Proceeds from that game, now in its fifth year of existence, go to Camp Good Days and Special Times, an organization that helps children with illnesses.
Aside from a financial donation being made, the Courage Bowl will also feature:
· All players wearing a pink and blue sweat band to draw attention to breast and prostate cancer
· Pink ribbon helmet stickers for every player
· All cancer survivors in attendance will be honored on the field prior to kickoff, with both teams running through their ‘human tunnel’
· Both teams visiting the Regional Cancer Center the week of the game
· Honorary captains: Anthony Squeglia, Daniel Chinsky and Nicholas Pagano
· Honorary coaches: Megan Collins and Mike Freeman
“The Courage Bowl allows our community to share and celebrate victories so that others in turn will not be afraid to fight,” said honorary coach Megan Collins. “In addition to bringing two friendly, longtime rivals together on the field we are also celebrating survivorship and success stories. I once read by sharing success stories, you help send the bully called cancer running from all of us.”

Trojans Stampede Over Rivals
Baseball | April 19, 2008The atmosphere Friday night was a great one for Coach Mike Hayes and his squad, for the Trojans won against arch-rival Cathedral Prep 10-3. The Blue and White did a great job scoring off the Rambler errors in the game. Prep had 5 errors which was the same number of hits that they had. Not to be overshadowed was the performance of Trojan pitcher Tyler DeCrapio. DeCrapio pitched a complete game and led his team to the win against Prep. This was the first game this year the Trojans play against their rivals, and they will meet again in a few weeks.
Trojans Continue To Struggle With Schedule
Volleyball | April 15, 2008The McDowell Trojan Volleyball team dropped their fifth consecutive game to start the season tonight against the Meadville Bulldogs. The Bulldogs won all three games; with the second being the closest of the three. Recent games against state championship contenders: Sagertown, Cambridge Springs and Maplewood has caused the Trojans to start sub par in the 2008 season. The boys will be at it again Thursday against Farrell.
