Frequently Asked Questions:
Why is kindergarten important?
Kindergarten fosters the learning and development skills that promote success in school. These skills are integrated as a child grows physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually. The Millcreek Township School District recognizes that children develop through active sensory involvement with their environment. They learn from every experience; therefore, the kindergarten curriculum includes socialization and interest time, individual and group activities, routines and discipline techniques – all presented in a developmentally appropriate setting.
How old does my child have to be to start kindergarten?
All students must be five (5) years old prior to September 1st, 2008. No student will be entered as an early admission student whose birth date falls on or after September 1st. There will be no exceptions to this policy.
How do I know which elementary school my child will attend?
The elementary school your child will attend is based on the boundaries set by the District. If you are unsure which school lies within the boundaries for your address, please contact the Transportation Department at 835-5346.
What information do I need to register my child?
You will need to bring:
* Your child’s birth certificate
* Proof of immunization records
* Proof of residency *
* A copy of your child’s most recent progress report (if he/she has attended a pre-school program)
A child will not be registered if these documents are not submitted. We will also need your child’s birth date, address, telephone number, and a physical description of your child, along with two forms of parental identification.
* Proof of residency would be one of a deed, lease, tax bill, or rent receipt with the owner’s name and address on it, along with the address of the property being rented, as well as one of a gas bill, electric bill, or proof of mailing address obtained from the post office.
What immunizations does my child need?
Immunization requirements for students entering kindergarten for the 2008-2009 school year are:
* Diphtheria and Tetanus: Four or more properly spaced doses of DTP, DtaP, Td, or DT, or any combination of the three with one dose on or after the fourth birthday.
* Polio: Three or more properly spaced doses of polio vaccine.
* MMR: One dose administered at twelve months of age or older and a second measles dose (commonly given as MMR).
* Hepatitis B: Three properly spaced doses of hepatitis B vaccine.
It is also necessary to provide one of the following:
* Proof of varicella vaccination (for prevention of chicken pox)
* Proof of date of having the disease of chickenpox
* Results of blood test showing immunity to chickenpox
Please contact your doctor or clinic now so that your child can receive these immunizations. Immunization information can be found under Health Services on the district website at www.mtsd.org.
Is kindergarten full day?
The Millcreek kindergarten program is full day at all seven elementary schools.
Am I able to visit the kindergarten teachers and school with my child before school begins?
An orientation day for kindergarten is held in August before the start of the school year. Parents can come with their child at this time to see the classroom, meet the kindergarten teachers, and go on a bus ride. Information on the date and time will be available at registration or in the school office.
How will I know if my child can receive bus transportation?
Except for Millcreek children within walking boundaries busing is available. You will receive your bus stop and time information in the mail about a week before school begins.
Do the schools offer before and after school care?
Before and after school care is available for a fee. The current rates and program guide are available through the Child Development office at 835-5529.
