The Student Conservation Association creates teams of students ages 15 and older to work on and conserve public lands each summer. They build bridges, restore habitats, and maintain historic sites. If you think you might be interested, pick up an informational flier outside the SWEP office today.

Attention Sophomores: Applications for the Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week may be picked up outside the SWEP office and should be turned into Mrs. Patton as soon as possible. Applications turned in early will get their first choice of weeks.

This is a reminder to sophomores that the applications for the Governor’s Schools of Excellence are available outside the SWEP office. Deadlines are approaching quickly. Pick up you application today.

Any student wishing to enter a lottery system in hopes of receiving a ticket to the McDowell/Prep home basketball game on January 24th must sign-up at lunch this week. The athletic department will have a table set-up in the cafeteria for this purpose. This will take place on Wednesday (1/7/09) for all lunches at MIHS and on Friday (1/10/09) for McDowell. This will be the only opportunity for a student to participate in the chance of receiving a game ticket. During your lunch please make sure to stop by the designated table and complete a ticket request form.

All members of the Speech & Debate team are reminded that we will be hosting an NCFL Tournament today after school here at MIHS. All members of the team are expected to compete and we are to meet at 2:45 pm in Mr. Caugherty’s room for an important team meeting and practice. If you have any questions or conflicts at all see Coach Caugherty immediately.

There will be a meeting for all students interested in playing football next year during activity period today. The meeting will be held in the Arts Commons.

Over the holiday break, the Trojan boys’ basketball team advanced to the finals of the FNB Holiday Tournament and lost a hard fought game to Ohio power St. Edwards 48 – 47. The Trojans bounced back on Saturday as they defeated Franklin 64-51 and are now 8 and 2 on the season. McDowell will travel to Mercyhurst Prep tomorrow.

Over the holidays, the freshmen boys’ basketball team lost to Upper St. Clair 30 -20 and defeated Hopewell 56 -30.

A reminder to all JV cheerleaders: You are to report at 4:30 on Tuesday, January 6th at McDowell High School to catch the bus for our away game. Please wear you uniforms to school tomorrow. Any questions, please see Coach Rister.

Attention all JV and Freshman cheerleaders: Please see Coach Rister after announcements today.

Members of the Performing Arts 2-3-4 classes are to report to the Little Theatre at 12:45 this afternoon to perform in the assembly program. The list of student names has been sent to the attendance offices. Thank you very much. Any student who ordered Center for Performing Arts shirts or sweats on or before December 5th can pick up their clothing items in 6-105 at MIHS. Please see Mr. Malthaner.

Also, on behalf of the McDowell Center for Performing Arts, thank you for all of the support you have given us this year and we hope to see you at future performances in the spring semester. If you have prose, poetry, drawings or photography please submit to your nearest Vox Box located in all English classrooms and the library. All entries must be submitted by Friday, January 9th. If you are interested in joining the VOX staff come to room 213 at McDowell during the next activity period.

Twas the day before break and all through the school students were stirring with cheer and Yule! Their coats were hung in their lockers with care, in hope that the Pep Club soon will be there! The students were nestled all snug in their seats, awaiting the winner who receives all the treats. Come dressed to impress in your holiday gear, wear the most outrageous outfit to end the year! Don’t be out done by your teacher’s festive wear, their closets are filled with past holiday flair! Join the Pep Club in spreading the holiday fun! Wear your most creative holiday ensemble on Tuesday, December 23rd. Win the MIHS Cheer-mister award and a special prize! The winner will be revealed on the afternoon video announcements.

Students knowing information concerning the whereabouts of a missing musical instrument should see Mr. Hetrick at your earliest convenience. All names are held in confidence and a reward may be offered.

Attention Vocal Ensemble and McDowell High School Mixed Chorus, you need to be dismissed for 3rd lunch, 11:55. Please arrive at the high school auditorium at 12:30 for the choral assembly.

Attention Vo-Tech students: B1, report to Mr. Morelli’s room (4-115) for Study Hall

B2, report to Ms. Spenik’s room (4-102). Half of the students will go with Ms. Spenik to the Assembly with the first floor students; the other half of the students will remain in study hall in Ms. Spenik’s room with Mr. Stephany. The remaining half of the study hall students will go to the second assembly with Ms. Bennett (4-110), while those who saw it previously will be in a Study Hall (4-110) with Ms. Li for the remainder of the block.

Assembly note: The Orchestra/Jazz Assembly scheduled for second block today will still be presented during a rescheduled second block. We will be extending second block from 1 -2:10. The basement and first floor will be called out of class and will attend the concert from 1:05 – 1:35; second floor will be called to the Assembly at 1:40. Students will be dismissed from the Assembly to go to their fourth block at approximately 2:10.

Congratulations to the McDowell Speech & Debate team which tied for first with Mt. Lebanon in the 32 team field at the North Catholic Invitational. Outstanding individual performances were turned in by Sarah Harrison, who was an outstanding speaker in Student Congress, also Lindsay Young the defending state champion was Outstanding Speaker in Impromptu. Additionally, Brett Wittmerhaus was named Outstanding Performer in Humorous Interp. McDowell’s duo interp team Sam Droney and Alana Barricks received Outstanding Performance in Duo Interp. Special recognition goes to Anjali Dingh who was recognized as an outstanding performer in Prose reading in a field of over 50 competitors. McDowell competes next at the Laird Lewis Invitational and the National Public Forum Challenge in Charlotte, North Carolina. Lindsay Young and Deanna Steffy, Public Forum Debaters are one of the sixteen teams from across the country selected to compete in the National Public Forum Challenge.

The PTA Reflection Award Winners 2008 – 09 are as follows:

Attention Erie County Tech Students: a reminder that if you did not turn in your signed permission slip, you must report to school on Monday and Tuesday as usual. You will report to a study hall during blocks 1 & 2. If you did return your permission slip – this is a reminder that your are responsible for your own transportation to school on Monday and Tuesday, and you must report to attendance at 10:50 a.m. to sign in.

Ms. Haibach’s extra help and make-up work sessions after school on Friday, 12/19 have been cancelled. Please reschedule with Ms. Haibach.

We have a Holiday concert scheduled for second block today. MIHS students who travel to McDowell Senior High should still do so and will attend a concert in that building. Classrooms will be called to the auditorium. There are two forty minute performances. Classes attend by floor. Students are reminded to sit with their teacher and class for the Assembly. Our music department has planned an enjoyable event for all of us.

Congratulations to the twenty-five members of the Speech and Debate team who placed at the NCFL League Tournament at Mercer last evening. Third place finishers were Nick Bozich, Brian Murray, Stefan Neamtu, Lydia Kibler, Hetal Patel, and Brett Wittmershaus. Second places were earned by Andrew Hayes, Brian Foster-Pegg, Kayla Moore, Helene Caniac, Esther Park, Marina Stinely, Tori Honard, Anjali Singh, Sam Droney, and Alana Barrics. McDowell had nine students win tournament championships; they were Sarah Harrison, Nasir Sharaf, Marcus Daum, Corey Mihna, James McKeon, Dan Stone, Leo Zausen, Aeryn Smith, and Jimmy Law. McDowell destroyed Cathedral Prep in debate with a perfect 16 -0 record in Prep versus McDowell match-ups! Great job!

The JV Trojans were back in action on the ice this week. McDowell faced the Butler Tornadoes. Trojans easily handled this team by a score of 6-2. Goals scored by Pete Hulusko, Hunter Conboy, Anthony Lecce, Mike Robinson and Josh Cunningham. Budda Pickens was in net with 24 saves for the victory. Trojans play the next two Saturdays at 3:15 at the Mercyhurst Ice Arena. Plan to stop out for some fast-paced hockey!

The McDowell Trojan boys’ basketball team will play Franklin tomorrow at home. The JV team will play at 1:00 with the varsity to follow at 2:30. In addition, the freshmen will also play Franklin at 11:00. All games will take place in the North gym. Come out and support the Trojan Hoop team.

Auditions for Arthur Miller’s The Crucible will be held December 15th and 16th after school in the Little Theatre. The Crucible is a drama-not a musical. Anyone interested in trying out must bring a monologue of your choice to perform at the audition. Monologues do not have to be memorized. The Crucible will be directed by Mr. Ken Falkenhagen, managing director of The Riverside Inn Theatre and assisted by Mr. Malthaner. If you wish more information about the show or the auditions, please see Mr. Malthaner in 6-105 at MIHS.

Any student who wants to work out to get into better shape or wants to get fit, the wellness center will be open after school from 2:30 – 3:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. So come on in and move! See you in the wellness center!

The freshmen boys’ basketball team defeated Franklin 42 to 35.

The girls’ freshmen basketball team defeated Eisenhower 37 -28 last night improving their record to 3-1. The team was led by Nicole DiLuzio who had 13 points with three, three pointers made. The girls play again Thursday at Northwestern.

The McDowell Trojan boys’ basketball team won their 5th game in a row with a 77-26 victory over Ft. Leboeuf last night. Mike Conner tallied 16 points, Dejon Young and Mike Molnar scored 12 while Jason Keim chipped in with 11. The JV team also won and remains undefeated on the season. McDowell will be back in action tomorrow at home against Central Tech.

The McDowell Trojans kept the North Hills Indians off the score board last night. McDowell adds another victory to the stats with a 5-0 win. Alex Margraf had two goals, Jared Gillespie, Sean Perhacs and Gus Martin each with one. Drew Ericson was in net for the shutout. Mark you calendars for a Free game this Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. at Mercyhurst.

Ms. Adkins class has dropped off several boxes of food so far and Mr. Bennett delivered about four boxes yesterday. Great job! So, give generously to those who really need some food in their cupboards this Christmas. Thank you so much.

Female students in grades 9 -12 are needed to volunteer with the Ophelia Project Storytelling team to share stories and ideas. Training is December 15th. If you are interested, please see Ms. Mackey in Student Services at MIHS for additional information.

JV and Varsity girls’ basketball teams won against Harborcreek last night. Their next game will be tomorrow at home against Franklin.

The McDowell Trojan boys’ basketball team won its third game in a row last night with a 59 – 28 victory over Girard. The Trojans were led by Joe Letto with 16 points, Jason Keim with 13 and Dejon Young with 10. Young also pulled down a team high 9 rebounds. The JV team improved to 4 and 0 with a 52 – 34 victory. The Trojans will be on the road tomorrow as they travel to Pittsburgh to face North Hills.

The girls’ JV basketball team defeated Tidioute H. S. last night 53 -23. The team was led by Nicole DiLuzio who led the team with 19 points, with four three pointers made. Kaitlyn Fromnecht added 13 points in victory. The girls’ record is now 1 and 1 and their next game is Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the north gym.

The McDowell Trojan boys’ basketball team plays their first home game tonight against Girard. The JV game starts at 6:00 with the varsity to follow at 7:30. Come out and support your McDowell Trojan Hoop Team.

The McDowell Lady Trojan bowling team improved to a record of 3 and 0 yesterday with a 24 to 4 victory over Central Tech at Eastland Lanes. Haleigh Czerwinski won all four of her matches and bowled a high single game of 184. Kalie Crosby also swept her opponent and contributed a high single game of 214 and an outstanding 551 series in the victory. The girls will bowl Strong Vincent for the Metro League lead next Wednesday at Eastland.

Fast Forward would like to welcome Dr. Mike Campbell from Penn State Behrend today. Dr. Campbell is a molecular biologist and will share a lot of interesting information with us. Please join us today during activity period in room 4-105.

The McDowell girl’s bowling team is to be dismissed at 2:15 this afternoon to allow for their match against Central Tech today.

Congratulations to the thirteen members of the McDowell Speech and Debate team that represented McDowell at the Princeton University classic this weekend. Tim Barthelmes and Josh Lapping advanced to the tournament semi-finals. Special recognition goes to the three McDowell competitors that advanced to the tournament finals and finished as Tournament Championship runner-ups. Brett Wittmershaus was the tournament runner-up in Humorous Interpretation, and the Duo-team of Sam Droney and Alana Barricks also placed second.
